LILLY

He’s holding back. He’s holding back and I want to know why. I want to know who put those walls up and what makes him so guarded and how come I can’t quite seem to get a read on him?

The curiosity about the enigma of a man sitting in front of me is completely overwhelming, but hesitations have never held me back before, so…why start now? If there are some layers that need to be peeled back…well, I’m all here for the peeling.

Aubrey would tell me to analyze every little detail of his behavior and demeanor and take the questions as potential red flags, add them into a pro/con list, and to a technical and detailed analysis of if I should continue things. But I’m…not Aubrey. Risks don’t scare me. And in the case of TJ…they intrigue me.

“Is it everything you hoped it would be?” I ask with a laugh, nodding at the glass of embarrassingly crappy wine he’s holding.

I clean up the pizza box from our Domino’s delivery which we already devoured, and head back into the living room.

“It’s…ten out of ten.” He shakes his head and smiles, swirling the glass around. “I think I have a new favorite wine.”

“They’re on BOGO a lot at Costco,” I tease, gesturing for us to sit down on the couch, hopefully close to each other.

“Well, I’ll have to go stock up then, won’t I?” He winks at me as he adjusts one of my many patterned throw pillows to sit down on the sofa.

I smile at him, his gaze deep and enchanting as he inches closer. His gorgeous lips are curved in an easy, natural half-smile, begging to be kissed.

I want to know everything about him right this second, but I can obviously tell he doesn’t really roll that way. I guess he’s just a slow burn type of guy, so I’ll take what I can get.

I’m dying to ask about the totally bizarre incident on the way here, as if he was hiding from someone, but I don’t want to pry. Clearly, he had no interest in elaborating on that, and I’ll have to just take a chill pill and let him tell me on his own time.

“So, have you started again?” I ask.

“Started what?” He draws back, furrowing his brow with confusion.

“Painting again, silly!” I nudge his arm playfully, using it as an excuse to scoot even closer to him on the couch so that our legs are touching.

“Oh, god.” He rolls his eyes and bites back a laugh. “You’re still on that?”

“Heck yeah I’m still on it. And I’m gonna stay on it until you get to whippin’ that brush around, or…whatever the hip lingo for painting is.”

He runs a hand through his hair, making it just tousled enough to be somehow even sexier than before. “I don’t think that’s something I have any interest in anymore. I mean…” He shrugs dismissively. “I was just a little kid when I was into painting.”

“But you loved it! You said it was your favorite thing to do,” I say with encouragement.
